February 2006 - It's So Much Friendier With ... More!
In honor of Adopt a Rabbit Month (and Valentine's Day, of course!), this month we are featuring pictures of bunnies with their bunny Valentines!
A Bonded Pair
Sydney (left) and Nadia (right) were adopted as a bonded pair from MCRS by Tracey K. and his wife in 2005 (they were previously known as Cagney and Lacey). They are best bunny buds and spend their days being cute, playing, and begging for treats! Tracey says, "Sydney is nicknamed 'Little Piglet' because she eats anything and everything you give her...including Nadia's food. Nadia's nickname is 'Chomp' because if you are in her way she will give you a little nip to let you know to move. Nadia is very sweet and gives lots of kisses while Sydney is more shy and has an attitude and likes to thump." Tracey says they are very glad they have the girls, even if they don't yet like to cuddle with the humans as much as they do each other!
A Happy Trio
Tribble (on right, formerly MCRS foster Adrienne) was adopted by Joanna C and Tanya H in July 2005 to be a companion to Tuxedo. Tuxedo (in back) is a 10 yr old bun that had recently lost his long-time companion, Sascha. He was clearly lonely and wanted to find a new bun to snuggle with. Along came little Adrienne and they bonded very quickly. Adrienne's long hair and her vast array of squeaky, chatty noises earned her the name Tribble.
A few months after Tribble and Tux became a pair, Sophie (on left) lost her long-time companion, too. The two pairs had been living side-by-side for years, so Joanna and Tanya decided to take a chance on making a trio. Sophie, also a former MCRS foster, was always the bossy bun with Chester, but she is so happy to have company that she has been very well-behaved with Tribble and Tux. Tribble is the designated groomer, and it is not unusual to find both Tux and Sophie side by side, presenting to Tribble, with her merrily grooming both of them!
Does Your Bunny Need a Companion?
Rabbits are naturally communal animals, so if you have a single rabbit who spends a lot of time alone, you may want to consider finding a Valentine for your bunny, to provide companionship when you can't. MCRS offers bunny "dating services" to help find a good match. Once bonded, (which can take a few months), two rabbits can share the same cage, litterbox, etc., and are not twice as much work as a single bun. Check out bunny bonding for additional info.
