July 2005 - Pooka in Boots

Pooka after her haircut

I can't believe it's already the middle of July, and I'm just now adding the Photo of the Month! In my defense - and I do need one - it's been a very busy month for all of us with the second rabbit confiscation in less than one year occurring in late June. I've been busy with website updates and fostering 4.5 of the adorable little furballs (ok, actually 5, but one of who is currently recovering from eye surgery in our Cottage Grove foster home).

In honor of the little rugbuns who are keeping us all hopping, I decided it was fitting to feature a picture of one of them this month. Michelle and John N sent in this photo of one of their fosters, Pooka. Pooka is a beautiful long-haired Jersey Wooly, and, as such, requires daily grooming to keep her coat in good condition. When she was removed from her former home and brought to the shelter while awaiting a foster home, it was discovered that her fur was so badly matted that the best and least-stressful option was to anesthetize and shave her. She emerged as something akin to a sheared lamb with a wooly head and what has been likened to fur gogo boots!

Her foster mom, Michelle, says "Pooka has turned out to be quite the explorer ... in addition to managing to find even the tiniest way out of her play area, she loves to stand on her hind feet and try to touch the sky. Her favorite spot is curled up next to her toy plush bunny on the top of the cardboard box she has in her cage, all comfy on her special towel. She's now urine-trained to her litterbox, and a 1/2-inch coat of fine white fur has grown in since the picture."

Update: Pooka was the first of the confiscated rabbits to find her forever home, having been adopted on June 16 at our adoption event in Roseville. Pooka, now named Calliope (but Pooka is still her middle name!) went to a great home with a lady who has previously had house rabbits. She spent some time meeting the many fosters at the Roseville event, but just fell in love with Pooka!
